Two Local Initiatives Deliver Necessary Nutrition
In the battle against food insecurity, Second Harvest Community Food Bank and Community Access Center are leading impactful initiatives to ensure that no one in their communities goes hungry.
Mobile Pantries Reach Those Facing Hunger
Serving an 18-county region, including parts of Kansas, Second Harvest Community Food Bank has been a lifeline for families, children, seniors and individuals facing hunger. In 2024, the organization distributed over 6.2 million pounds of food through its Fresh Mobile Pantry program.
Launched in 2016 to serve communities identified as food deserts, these mobile pantries offer approximately 25-30 pounds of fresh produce and lean proteins per visit to every family. With help from grant funds provided by Frontier Farm Credit, this program serves over 16,000 individuals monthly, ensuring access to nutritious food in a contact-free, drive-through format.
In Brown County alone, Second Harvest distributed 172,358 pounds of food in 2024, with plans to expand further as demand continues to grow. Their efforts not only address immediate hunger needs but also foster hope and resilience within the communities they serve.
New Forklift Streamlines Food Pantry’s Operations
A local food pantry run by The Community Access Center is also playing a significant role in fighting food insecurity. Once a month individuals and families in the Independence, KS area can receive food at no cost.
To improve the efficiency and safety of their operations, the center invested in a hand-operated rechargeable battery forklift, made possible by grant funds from Frontier Farm Credit as well as other business and community donations.
This equipment significantly eases the burden on senior volunteers and staff, many of whom are 55 and older, by reducing the strain of moving heavy boxes. The forklift not only enhances safety but also maximizes storage space, enabling the center to serve more individuals and families in need.
