Crop Hail Insurance Overview

Understanding Hail and Wind Insurance

Hail and Wind insurance provides the grower protection against yield reduction caused by hail and/or fire. Other coverages available include transit, vandalism, lightning, fire department service charge and/or stored grain. Optional endorsements are available for wind damage and/or replant coverage.

Crop Hail coverage gives you acre by acre protection up to the actual cash value of your crop. There are many Crop Hail policy options for individual coverage or that work with your Federal crop policy for total risk management protection.

Production Hail

A Production Hail policy may be a more efficient alternative to traditional hail insurance plans as it factors in the producer’s actual production history, such as Basic and Companion Hail insurance.

  • Coverage is strategically concentrated on the part of your yield that is left exposed with Yield Protection, Actual Production History and Revenue Protection plans.
  • Maximizes your coverage so you don’t double cover your crops.
  • Available through multiple crop hail companies.
  • Available at 100%, 110%, 115%, 120%, depending on insurance company.
  • Available at 1% to 100% (varies by insurance company) of the MPCI Base Price.

Coverage Example

Production Hail plans provide protection on yield not covered by multi-peril policies — the bushels where profit is often counted. In this example, Production Hail coverage increased insured bushels from 150 to 240.

Companion Hail coverage is also available to insure the portion of the crop not covered under federal crop insurance policies by paying out most of the liability with an increasing payment factor before a loss would be payable under a Yield Protection or Revenue Protection plan.

Available to all qualifying producers regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, sexual orientation, and marital or family status.
