Why I chose agriculture

In 1975, I bought my uncle and dad’s farm operation because my uncle had health problems. I was only 23 years old, but my wife and I grew the dairy from 30 cows to 128 cows. In 1996, we transitioned from dairy cows to beef cows.

Our greatest challenge

Nothing goes as planned. Our biggest day-to-day challenge is overcoming all the obstacles that jump in the way of completing what we had planned for the day.

Our business approach

Diversity is key. Every farm we buy or rent has hay ground, pasture and crop ground. We have to be diversified to get the full return out of each farm.

How we make decisions

My son and I take a drive in the morning and hash out what we’re going to do during the day. We get on the same page, which makes it easier for our help if we both know what we’re trying to accomplish.

Our vision for the operation

Our goal is to expand every year. If we aren’t expanding, we are sitting still. We also try to stay centrally located. Our farthest farm ground is five miles from our home base.

What I enjoy most about farming

I enjoy watching our cattle and crops grow. It sounds silly, but I even like building fences and cattle pens. After we finish, we can sit back and say, “We built that.”

Why we work with Frontier Farm Credit

I came to Frontier Farm Credit because they had operating notes. My former bank didn’t have operating notes and every two to three weeks I had to sign a new note. I felt like I spent more time at the bank than I did farming. Frontier Farm Credit’s operating note has made my life so much simpler.

We’ve been with Frontier Farm Credit for a few years. We really like our financial officer; he is just easy to work with.
