USDA now rates winter wheat condition at 50 percent good/excellent in the 18 states it tracks, down from 52 percent. The poor/very poor end of the scale held steady this week. A quarter of the Kansas crop now stands in poor/very poor status, up 1 point from a week ago. The top end of the Kansas crop dropped from 47 percent last week to 45 percent.
The 18-state crop progressed to 80 percent headed, 3 points ahead of average.
Spring wheat planting and emergence both are 5 points ahead of average, at 96 and 79 percent respectively, and 62 percent is rated in the top end, with 6 percent in the bottom end of the range.
Initial Crop Condition Falls Short of Last Year
USDA rated corn condition as of May 28, 2017, at 65 percent good/excellent and 7 percent poor/very poor. This compares with 72 percent on the top end and just 4 percent on the bottom end last year.
As the table below shows, states with three quarters of the crop rated good/excellent include Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Michigan and Texas. Four states stand out with double digits in the bottom end of the range: Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kansas.
Seventy-three percent of the corn had emerged as of May 28, just 2 percentage points behind the five-year average.

Soybean Status
Soybean planting has reached 67 percent, only one percentage point behind average, according to USDA. The states most behind are Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. Nebraska and Kansas are behind by a more modest three percent and five percent, while Iowa is right on schedule and South Dakota is 3 percentage points ahead of average.
However, emergence in most states now is behind the five-year average, led by Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana. Those most ahead of average are Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Weather
Looking ahead at the six to 10 day weather forecast from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the outlook is for below average temperatures through the Corn Belt and Northeast, with probability of above average rainfall from the southern Plains across the South and up the East Coast through the mid-Atlantic states. Odds favor drier than usual weather in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana and north.
