Why I chose agriculture

I grew up farming and enjoyed it. It just seems like where I need to be. For six years, I built houses during the day and farmed in the evenings. During the drought in Oklahoma I borrowed money to buy two potloads of cows earning me ownership in our cattle business.

Our business approach

We try to be calculated. For our feeder cattle, we use computer programs and a nutritionist to know our cost of gain. We mark up our own feed because it does have a value. We push the pencil to know we can get a good return on our investment and that there will be a net profit at the end of the day.

How we make decisions

My dad and I take a drive each morning to look at crops and that’s when we make a lot of our decisions. When we’re finished, we can tell our employees what we’re doing for the day and it helps us all be on the same page.

How we know we’re heading in the right direction

Each year, we continue to grow by either renting or buying ground. Our diversity in crops, cow-calf and feeder cattle helps make us successful. We evaluate return on investment, and it’s got to be there if we take on something new.

What I enjoy most about farming

I really like adopting new technology. Precision ag equipment saves time and energy. On days we plant or spray for 20 hours, I’m not as tired at the end of the day because of automation.

Why we work with Frontier Farm Credit

My dad had been with Frontier Farm Credit about a year when I wanted to buy my first cows. Frontier Farm Credit fit my needs well and they are very knowledgeable. Many of their people have ag backgrounds and they are easy to relate to. Frontier Farm Credit has allowed us to expand, and they have the programs in place to help us be successful.
