Crop Talk

For most —if not all —of us agriculture has always been part of our lives. I can’t remember a year with more variables in the weather along with many other adverse challenges.

Our 41 county territory experienced problems in the wheat crop from various winter conditions. An extremely wet spring led to some flooding and delayed spring planting. To top it off, more moisture and storms packed with hail caused more stress to the wheat crop —including infestations of scab and vomitoxin. It never fails to amaze me that Kansas farmers find ways to get the job done. Outside of a few extremely wet situations, the spring crops were planted and replanted and wheat harvest was completed in our territory.

As always, crop conditions and wheat production vary from farm to farm but for the most part we are in good shape. The markets have made the normal harvest/early summer corrections, but are still strong. We are not sure what the true crop situation is in the upper corn belt other than they were stressed —maybe more than we were.

Keep in mind your multi-peril crop insurance policy does insure for losses due to quality adjustments and poor test weight. With the reported scab and vomitoxin problems in our area, you may have experienced this problem. We had some reports of the grain being totally rejected. Remember to contact your crop insurance specialist as soon as you realize you may have a loss.

You should contact your crop insurance specialist BEFORE you hay your crop or use it for silage. The crop insurance adjuster needs to inspect the field and identify the areas to be left for appraisal for APH purposes.

The sales closing date for fall seeded crops is Sept. 30, 2008. RMA has announced changes to the Revenue Assurance and CRC policies for the 2009 crop year. I encourage you to call one of your Frontier Farm Credit Crop Insurance Specialists at (888) 598-8329 to fill out an application or make changes to your crop insurance policy, as well as to understand your MPCI policy changes.

As always, we appreciate your business and look forward to servicing your crop insurance needs.
